A Reminder of Manners: Make everyday a good manners day!

National Etiquette Week serves as a reminder of the paramount importance of manners in our daily lives.

Manners should not be a bygone art. Acts of kindness, such as holding doors and expressing gratitude, should be integral to our social interactions. Etiquette holds immense value in fostering respect and creating positive interactions. Even in the digital age, showing respect remains a timeless virtue.

The three primary areas of etiquette - social, business, and dining - all emphasize the significance of communication. Effective communication involves maintaining eye contact, engaging in meaningful conversations, and demonstrating politeness. A firm handshake is also an essential component of our interactions. Below are two additional ways you can continue to foster good manners:

1. Be mindful of cell phone usage

The birth of cell phones has contributed to a decline in intercommunication. It is crucial to be mindful of the impact of cell phones on our social interactions. Whether in business meetings, dinners, elevators, or doctor’s offices, there are moments to put the phone away to have conversations without imposing on others.

2. Write thank you notes

Thank you notes are a simple yet effective way to brighten someone’s day. Consider doing so to express gratitude to a customer for their business or to congratulate a friend on their achievements. This gesture will strengthen your connections and help build positive relationships.

Bonus tip: For children, receiving mail can be a source of excitement. Dedicate time to writing a note to your children and observe their joy as they open it. Everyone appreciates acknowledgment, and taking the time to connect demonstrates you care.

Use etiquette to build your confidence

Confidence is a valuable trait closely tied to our well-being which can be enhanced through etiquette. In a dining setting with multiple utensils, do you feel overwhelmed or uncertain? By mastering proper etiquette - in this situation and many others you may find yourself in - you can avoid copying others and develop a sense of confidence that then frees you to engage in meaningful conversation with others.

Understanding proper etiquette can also help alleviate emotional stress often tied to social situations which further enhances confidence. Consider using the following strategies to project your confidence:

  • Prepare yourself ahead of time for social interactions.

  • Maintain a composed and courteous demeanor in all situations.

  • Demonstrate your knowledge and leadership.

  • Project a polished and professional image.

While it may seem like good manners are a lost art, that doesn’t have to be you! In our fast-paced lives as parents and grandparents often juggling work, childcare, and extracurricular activities, it can be challenging to prioritize our manners. But remember that the significance of small gestures cannot be overstated. The pleasant experiences created by your good manners can evoke positive emotions not only for you, but all those around you.
